
If you enjoy a good party then there’s nowhere else to be than the thrilling Carnival of Venice that takes place from the end of January to Mid-February every year.
It’s believed to have originated in 1162 following the victory of the ‘Serenissima Repubblica’. Popularised during the Renaissance, the Venice Carnival became world famous during the 17th and 18th centuries, known as a celebration of feasting, colourful masks, costumes and pleasure!

In 1797 however it was outlawed by the King of Austria and the wearing of masks was strictly forbidden!
It made a gradual comeback in the 19th century and fortunately in 1979, the Italian government made it an official festival to promote the rich history and culture of Venice.
In recent years visitor numbers have reached approximately three million during the Carnival of Venice! Many events take place during the carnival, the most famous probably being ‘La Maschera Più Bella’ where fashion ad costume designers judge the most beautiful mask.
