Planning a trip to Italy in May or June means that you are coming at the tail end of spring and the beginning of summer, just as tourists really begin to arrive and while everything continues to fully bloom. Not only is this when weather is milder but more than pleasant enough for days in a luxury villa with pool in Italy or by the sea but it is also when Italy is at its potentially prettiest. The coming summer days and this natural splendour, as well as harvests beginning to load tables with delicious produce, means that there are plenty of reasons to celebrate.

As a result, May and June are a time when there is an especially large number of sagre, traditional local festivals that can celebrate saints, holy days, historic events, particular food products, and more with feasts, parades, parties, concerts, and other events. Those who book a vacation rental in Italy at this time of the year, will be able to enjoy authentic, traditional experiences alongside locals, sample incredible wines, enjoy regional dishes, and really get a genuine look into Italian life.

Of course, while the food-related events and parties are well worth seeking out and enjoying, we also recommend experiencing one of the infiorata events that take place around Italy each May or June. These particular celebrations, or “flowering” events, are the pride of several towns located around Italy and involve the creation of breath-taking, elaborate flower-based decorations that wow guests and locals alike.

Lots of people prefer to holiday outside of the peak tourism months and May is a great time to plan a trip to Italy as the real tourist crowds have yet to descend but the temperatures have begun to get rise in earnest, prices for flights and accommodation remain a little lower, and, as the season is just about to turn, you get the best of both spring blooms and beauty and summer fun. A luxury villa in Sicily, in particular, is perfect for a May getaway and if you are spending time in Sicily during the third week of the month there is one town that you should definitely visit, Noto.

Noto is a beautiful town with cinematic good looks that features UNESCO-awarded Baroque architectural gems and very pretty and typical winding little streets. In May, it becomes even more beautiful when the annual Infiorata di Noto festival takes place and the scent of flowers becomes heavy in the air. Infiorata happens in cities all over Italy in May and June and is a festival of floral art displays, with works of art created from flower petals to adorn city streets and historic buildings, but the Infiorata celebration in Noto is the most famous of all.

The Shroud of Turin is a mysterious object which has been drawing pilgrims to Turin, Italy for centuries. Much debate has always surrounded the Shroud with people wondering where it came from, how the markings on it were made, if it is Jesus Christ who is depicted and how old it is. We will, perhaps, never know the answers to some of these questions. The Shroud, however, is still fascinating for those interested in history, faith, religion and science alike. If you want to see it for yourself you could find a vacation rental nearby and make a trip to view it this year. This could be a once-in-a-lifetime trip as the Shroud is being shown in a rare exposition.
