During Roman times an agreement was made between Italy and France to construct a road that ran through Susa Valley and Cole de Montgenevre connecting the two countries. It was called Via Francigena, a pilgrim path that led all the way to Rome! It was used by many and sacred buildings were built along the way to accommodate them such as the Novalesa Abbey and the Sacra di San Michele Abbey.
