In the 16th century, the wealthy Borromean Family bought them to build lavish villas and summer palaces on. Isola Madre is the biggest of the Borromean Islands. The now uninhabited palace is known for its beautiful English gardens and inside, the many exquisite paintings which adorn its walls.
Isola Bella was once a barren rock but in the 15th century, a large volume of soil was transported to the island to lay foundations for a spectacular ten terraced garden to surround a luxury summer palace being built there.

Isola dei Pescatori, also known as Isola Superiore is the only one of the Borromean Islands that is still inhabited. A fishing village here thrives from tourist day trips especially and several welcoming craft shops and eateries are situated here to enjoy. The small Isolino di San Giovanni and Malghera have nice beaches to bathe at.
Each of these islands is distinctive in character, ranging from lavish manicured designs to simplistic natural beauty. They can easily be visited via frequent ferries from the shores around Lake Maggiore.
