See the beautiful sight of the Castelli di Cannero on an Italian vacation to Lake Maggiore in Piedmont. These two castles were built on small islets on the lake and are located just off the shore from Cannero Riviera. Choose from a charming range of villa rentals in Piedmont where you can relax and unwind after entertaining days at Lake Maggiore.

These once majestic fortresses now lay partly in ruins and were built between the 11th and 12th centuries. They are among the most iconic sites on Lake Maggiore and talks are ongoing about restoring the larger castle for tourism purposes.

These ‘floating’ castles were once inhabited by five brothers of the Mazzarditi family and were called Castello di Terrafiume and Malpaga Castle. Territorial feuds led to their destruction in 1414 but thirty years on, the two islets came under the ownership of the Borromeo Family and Vitaliana Castle was later built there in 1519.

When Count Lodovico, a member of the Borromeo family died, the castle was abandoned soon after and to this day has lain uninhabited. Book a glorious sailing around Castelli di Cannero and capture photos of their eerie ruined beauty.

Learn the incredible detailed history which has been recorded about Castelli di Cannero from tourist information points around Lake Maggiore as well as other beautiful attractions like the Borromean Islands. Go on a day trip or two of the towns surrounding Lake Maggiore including Ranco, Monvalle and Dormelletto.
