Known as the ‘Gateway to the East’, this city has been a very important trading port between Italy,Greece and Eastern countries over the centuries because of its prime location jutting out on the Adriatic Sea.

Roman troops used it constantly during the reign and expansion of the Roman Empire and trade merchants from Venice used it as an import and export station for exotic goods.

The decorative city of Lecce in the region of Apulia has been nicknamed ‘Florence of the South’ for its abundant array of ornate buildings and glorious monuments. A soft rock from Lecce, a type of limestone, was used in alot of the construction of this city as it’s strong and resilient yet easy to carve. Lecce is located on the Salento Peninsula on the ‘heel of Italy’s boot’.
