An interesting historical fact about Bari is that it was the only European city in Europe to have experienced the wrath of chemical warfare during World War II! Even more unusual it that it was completely unintentional! On December 2nd 1943, German bomber planes dropped bombs over Bari harbour.
But there was a large pile of mustard gas stacked up on the docks awaiting shipment. The transport of this dangerous gas was a highly classified operation as the Italian military were preparing to use it if the German army initiated chemical warfare. So it was a horrific discovery for many when this stash exploded and caused the deaths of 69 people and the injury of many more!
On a lighter note, tourists can enjoy a day of exploration around the old quarter of Bari where there are some magnificent old buildings. Be sure to walk around the majestic Basilica of Saint Nicholas which was founded back in 1087! The relics of the saint are buried beneath the altar. Also worth a look around is the large cathedral of Bari. An architectural feat, designed and built in true Byzantine style, is a wonderful sight to behold. The relics of Saint Sabinus are buried here.
