Enjoy A Break Away To The City Of Brindisi In Apulia!

Situated on a large natural harbour on the coast of Apulia is the pretty city of Brindisi! Known as the ‘Gateway to the East’, this city has been a very important trading port between Italy,Greece and Eastern countries over the centuries because of its prime location jutting out on the Adriatic Sea.

Roman troops used it constantly during the reign and expansion of the Roman Empire and trade merchants from Venice used it as an import and export station for exotic goods.

Tourists will love the smooth sandy beaches and glittering blue waters that frame the coast around the area so perhaps staying in a peaceful holiday villa in Brindisi would be the perfect place to relax in for a few days. From here, there are many interesting places to see and visit in and around the city itself.

Brindisi city lies between two bays linked to the sea by a narrow channel and so is a wonderful place to come if you enjoy water sports! Rent a canoe or kayak for a few hours and explore the rugged coast surrounding Brindisi or enjoy a fun water skiing or scuba diving lesson...the list goes on for lots of thrilling endeavours to get involved with here!

Be sure to visit the towering Castello Rosso which overlooks Brindisi bay, a majestic fortress built from red brick that earned itself its nickname. Admire the exquisite marble architecture of the church of San Giovanni al Sepolcro and the magnificent 11th century Romanesque cathedral in Piazza Duomo which is one of the city’s finest buildings.

Those with an interest in history would also like a visit to the well laid out archaeology museum in this square. It had six defined sections which interestingly describe the history, culture and traditions of Brindisi.

Visit the site where once two tall Roman pillars stood to mark the end of the Appian Way. This was a very important military road connecting the city of Rome to Brindisi during the rapid growth of the Roman Empire. Today only one stands tall at a height of 19 metres. The other unfortunately crumbled in 1582.

The cuisine of Brindisi is deliciously simple. Snails are a popular feature on the menu so if you're not too squeamish, why not give them a go?

Savour the tasty local Brindisi sheep’s milk cheese along with some crusty bread, a few juicy olives soaked in olive oil and some generous slices of spicy sausage.

You could buy all these ingredients in shops and stalls across the city and together would make for an excellent picnic lunch to savour during your explorations! Sea urchins, swordfish and fresh vegetables are some of the main ingredients in popular dishes to try when you’re here.
