The River Po in Italy is a stunning trail to follow across Northern Italy. It springs up from the earth in Po Valley in Piedmont and flows east for several hundred miles before entering the sea through a delta near Ferrara city.

The River Po is the longest in Italy at a length of 682 km and its widest point measures at 503 metres. 141 tributary rivers flow into the River Po along its journey which contribute to its speed and force across the country.

Alps pile dwellings

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011, the intriguing collection of 111 archaeological sites scattered across the Alps is a fantastic tourist attraction to visit on your next Italian vacation!

These pile dwellings of the Alps are shared between Italy, Germany, France, Austria and Slovenia. Nineteen of them rest in the northern Italian regions of Lombardy, Veneto, Piedmont, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Trentino Alto Adige.

The sites of these unusual settlements are always located close to water and the oldest of them are located by Lake Varese in Lombardy.
Scrovegni Chapel in Veneto

It was commissioned to be built as a family chapel by a rich man called Enrico Scrovegni. He made his fortune through banking.

In the 14th century, Christianity condemned the act of charging interest on loans and so, many wealthy bankers felt obliged to obtain absolution for their trade by building lavish religious monuments.

What makes the Scrovegni chapel so famous is that it was entirely covered inside with richly detailed paintings depicting biblical scenes. It was painted by master artist, Giotto over a period of 855 days between 1302 and 1305.

Torcello Island in Venice was the first island in what expanded to become the vast lagoon city of Venice. It’s the oldest region of Venice to have been continuously populated by people since the downfall of the Roman Empire.

Many Venetian people fled the marshland to seek refuge from barbarians and looters on the marshy lagoon island of Torcello.
