Towards the end of its journey across Italy, a wide delta formed due to the large volume of sediment dropped by the now slow flowing river. Five main channels and hundreds of small ones flow through this mass of sediment to reach the Adriatic Sea.
The huge valley around which the River Po rises is called the Po Basin or Po Valley.
It is now a very industrious area of Italy and in 2002, more than one third of the country’s population lived around the area! Hydroelectric stations are built along the River Po and its vital water source serves the agricultural land around it well to grow crops and cultivate vast rice fields.
