4. Villa Di Montelopio

Villa Di Montelopio dates from the 16th century and still retains the atmosphere, though part has been totally restored in recent years. You still find the cotto floors and the beamed ceilings but with all modern comforts now a bonus. The castellated towers, stone exterior walls, ivy clinging to the facade, high ceilings, intricate details of the decor, intense sense of character and artworks all make for an incredibly romantic and picturesque experience that one won't quickly forget. The outdoor spaces are also charming: you are welcomed into the property by the delightful stone courtyard out front, perfect for dining, pretty terraces, a groomed little garden and a paved pool area, installed among the olive groves. It is available from just €542 per night and sleeps up to nine in five bedrooms.
Paolotti
5. Paolotti

Paolotti is the historic property for the bargain hunters of the world. This incredible villa sleeps up to 12 in 6 bedrooms and is available from just €139 per night. Built around 1850 by a baron of the Perugia aristocracy, relative of the Pope Pio IX, it has been recently renovated with absolute care for the original frescos and period furniture.

The property is close to the village of Bettona, just 3km away and is perfectly located for exploring the surrounding area. It features a pretty garden and private pool and is simply and tastefully decorated.
Montoro
6. Montoro

Montoro is a lovely villa that was built in the second half of the 19th century, and has been completely renovated. The views from the property are like a picture of typical Chianti landscape, rich with gently rolling hills covered with vineyards and olive groves. Within the well-maintained fenced garden with trees and flower beds, there is a swimming pool, surrounded by a terrace. The interiors of the house are furnished with comfortable, traditional furniture, antiques and features a very well-equipped kitchen and modern bathrooms. The grounds are well-maintained and impressive, the views are stunning and the whole property is incredibly cosy and pretty. Best of all, it sleeps up to 14 in 7 bedrooms from €687 per night.
San Giovanni
7. San Giovanni

San Giovanni is probably our most striking historic property. It is a typical house of the Veneto and is perched right on the water at Torcello, a lovely lagoon town that was a precursor of Venice but later abandoned in favour of that more famous city. San Giovanni was built towards the end of the seventeenth century and is the only villa on Torcello. The property takes its name from the Romanesque church of San Giovanni some of whose ruins have been restored by the International Save Venice Fund and which can still be admired in the garden. It features rich, elegant interiors and is surrounded by an enormous garden with a private pool.

An added bonus is that water taxis can easily deliver guests to Venice and Burano, making it a nice location for exploring those areas, while remaining far from the crowds and smells of the city. The property sleeps 12 in 6 bedrooms and is available from €1141 per night, a price that reflects its luxurious finish and incredibly well-preserved state that will make all of your period drama fantasies come to life.
