Italy has no shortage of architectural gems. In fact, for architecture lovers, as the birthplace of the Renaissance, it is a must-see destination. However, while many of these buildings and monuments may be stunning and majestic feats of architecture, there are also many that are oddities with strange quirks and unusual histories and origins. These stranger works may still be beautiful but there is no denying that they are unusual, which is only one more reason that they are fascinating and to love them! Villa Palagonia is an 18th century architectural gem and palace famous for its “monsters”, the grotesque sculptures of beasts and figures that decorate the garden and surrounding wall.

Caponata is an eggplant (aubergine) salad dish from Sicily that consists of chopped fried eggplant and celery seasoned with sweetened vinegar, with capers in a sweet and sour sauce. There are all sorts of regional variations but the original is, indeed, a Sicilian dish. The scholar, Alberto Denti di Pirajno, suggested that the dish was born aboard a ship as a mariner's breakfast, due to the large amount of vinegar used, which would have acted as a preservative. Giuseppe Coria, an authoritative voice on the history of Sicilian cooking, meanwhile, suggests that its name comes from the Latin word “caupo” (tavern) and was, as such, originally a tavern food for travelers. Sicilian food authority Pino Correnti believes that its name is derived from the Catalan word “caponada”. Despite the lack of clarity around the exact origins and invention of the dish, it is to originally be of Spanish origin.

We've already featured a recipe for granita, a Sicilian semi-frozen dessert but the dish itself is so rich in history and tradition that it seemed a waste not to discuss that at all. This delicious and refreshing dish is made from sugar, water and various flavourings and, while originally from Sicily, is now available all over Italy. It is somewhat like a sorbet or snow cone but has a coarser, more crystalline texture – though the degree of this changes from place to place. There are lots of different flavours but some common and traditional ones include lemon, mandarin orange, jasmine, coffee, almond, mint, strawberry and black mulberry. Chocolate is a particular tradition of the city of Catania.

The best ice-cream, or gelato, of your life might seem like a silly reason to visit Italy but it's really a rather legitimate one. The refreshing lemon version is the one most well-known outside of Italy but in Sicily you'll find traditional Sicilian flavours like strawberry, mulberry, peach and almond. Its origins probably stretch back to Roman times, as with gelato, though it was later widely popularised by the Arabs. According to a 10th -century Arab writer's travel diary, Ballarò Market is the oldest food market in Palermo and the very fact that it was being noted as being a fixture of the city all the way back in the 10th century is astounding and showcases just how steeped in local history and culture it is. Held in Albergheria, one of the four Norman quarters of the capital city of Sicily, it is one of four traditional markets, with each quarter having one of its own. The markets of Ballarò, Vucciria, and Capo are the most famous and popular among both locals and tourists, with the Mercato di Ballarò being the most popular and well-known of all.

The historic markets in Palermo feel a lot like the medinas of Marrakech or Cairo, which makes sense as Sicily was once under Arab rule and many remainders and reminders of this time still flavour the island and Palermo, in particular, from the architecture to the food to the language. This is one of the aspects of Sicilian life in which Arab traditions and culture feel the most alive and best-preserved in the Italy of today. As such, they also offer a rather unique cultural and culinary experience in Italy and really are a must-see.
