Isernia is an ancient Roman town sitting high up on a rocky crest in the Moliseregion between the River Carpino and the River Sordo. The Roman layout of the original town of Isernia can still be clearly seen by tourists today.

A typical Roman town plan consisted of a wide central street with many side streets running out from it at right angles on both sides.
