Agnone is a peaceful scenic town in the Molise region of southern Italy. Set in a mountainous area, Agnone is only twenty five kilometres north-west of Campobasso and offers lots for the tourists to see and do.

It was awarded the prestigious Orange Flag as a mark of its friendly welcome to visitors and beautifully preserved medieval buildings.

There are nineteen churches in Agnone, fourteen of which have impressive bell towers standing tall over the town. The sound of these bells ringing in unison is truly a superb symphony of music!

Agnone is famous for its bell manufacturing. In fact, there’s a museum here dedication to this ancient art. Called the Pontificia Fonderia Marinelli, this bell manufacturing factory was where many of the huge bells that ring in the Vatican were made.

Pope John II actually made a trip here in 1995 to see how its skilled workers wielded such beautiful bells. There are some bells on display here that are over one thousand years old!

Be sure to see the church of San Marco with a decorative Renaissance portal embellished by a copper lion and the exquisite artworks that lie within. Christmas in Agnone is truly magical when a lively carnival is taking place.

The main event is called ‘Ndocciata’ which is a massive parade of people marching at night carrying fire lit torches. Along with music, the sight of these torches moving through the town and being used to light a massive bonfire is mesmerising.

If you’re passing through Agnone on the 17th-19th August, you’ll enjoy walking around a colourful art and antiques fair where there are many beautiful sights to behold. This quaint little town is a haven of culture, delicious slow foods as well as being home to some exceptional craft making. It’s well preserved beauty has certainly earned its right to become of Italy’s renowned Orange Flag towns!
