Heading south on the map of Italy we come across the glorious region of Molise. It’s the newest of all the regions and is bordered by Abruzzo, Apulia, Latium and Campania and has a small coastline facing the Adriatic Sea.

It’s made up of two provinces called Isernia and Campobasso. It’s similar in many ways to the region of Abruzzo as it has a large agricultural economy, especially livestock which are reared in the mountainous areas.

Tourists can choose from a few charming holiday rentals in Molise where they can base their stay and explore this charming region for a few days. Those looking for peaceful settings have come to the right place as Molise isn’t densely populated and hasn't really changed much from medieval times in terms of layout and way of life.
The fire parade at Ndocciata festival
Visit the old town of Capracotta which sits beside lots of archaeological sites for you to explore, or enjoy learning the history of a prehistoric site at Isernia town! If you’re in the mood for celebration then go to witness the colourful christmas Ndocciata festival in the town of Agnone! Enjoy watching vibrant parades, listen to lively music and soak in the warm atmosphere of the jolly townspeople!

If you’re in the mood for doing something different then visit the charming town of Scapoli for a few hours where there’s a museum dedicated to bagpipes! This unusual musical instrument is made here so why not have a go at playing it yourself?
A worn mountain path
The food of Molise is absolutely exquisite; lamb is very popular here, and not just the most commercialised cuts…all of the animal. Try rustic dishes using lamb’s offal like liver, kidneys and even glands that are full of flavour! Liver sausages are especially popular in this region and will certainly give you the energy you need to keep going on your adventurous trails through Molise!

If you enjoy the great outdoors then you’d love a scenic hiking trail or horse riding trail along ‘Tratturi’ which are well trodden shepherd and sheep trails high in the mountains. The views from high up are spectacular so be sure to bring your camera. Or head down to the coast to dive into some fun water sports like snorkelling or sea kayaking!

Molise is a wonderful place to base your next Italian holiday so be inspired to start planning it today!
