The central region of Abruzzo is an unruly mountainous land full of adventure and excitement! It borders Le Marche, Latium, Molise and has a coastline facing the Adriatic Sea.

This beautiful place is made up of four provinces; Chieti, L’Aquila, Pescara and Teramo that are home to some of the finest and best preserved medieval towns in the country!

Some of the nicest ones to visit are Castel del Monte and Santo Stefano di Sessanio which are located in Gran Sasso National Park at the foothills of the Apennines. L’Aquila is the name of the region’s capital and offers lots of cultural activities for the tourist to do. There are two climates here; warm and sunny near the coastline and cold and rainy as you travel further inland up the mountains because incoming warm air is forced to rise up and form dark clouds, which then produces rain!

There is an abundance of unusual flora growing in Abruzzo because of this strange mixture. Nature lovers would adore staying in a pretty holiday villa in Abruzzo where there are many reserves that protect the natural beauty of the area and its wildlife.

Abruzzo was quite a poor region until a few decades ago when tourism began to take off and the agricultural economy began to thrive. Wine became a major export, namely from the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo area which is one of the most exported DOC wines in Italy!

You can’t pass through Abruzzo without trying some of their mouth watering traditional dishes. Taste the rich flavours of a famous dish called ‘Spaghetti alla Chitarra’ which is made using spaghetti with a homemade tomato sauce and meat like pork, goose or lamb.

Lamb is a very popular meat here because of the many sheep farmed on the higher ground of Abruzzo’s mountains but as you travel closer to the coast, you will find that seafood becomes increasingly popular on the menus!

Sports lovers have a wide variety of activities to choose from on their vacation here including; mountain climbing, skiing, diving, paragliding and much more! Go hiking to see the stunning Morricana waterfall that cascades from the Laga Mountains or go canoeing along the fast moving Sangro River!

Climb the 2,564 metre high Mount Camicia which to a beautifully isolated summit with incredible panoramic views or go sailing across the pretty Lake Scanno as the sun sets! There’s so much to do and see here in Abruzzo that you might never want to return from your thrilling holiday here!
