Want to set off on a scenic adventure then why not go to explore the beautiful lake of Bolsena in Latium, a vast pool of water that filled up a dormant volcano crater over 370,000 years ago. Visit Montefiascone which is situated on the south-east side of Lake Bolsena on top of a forested hill. See the lovely cathedral here designed by the famous Venetian architect, Michele Sanmicheli. The old ruins of a previous papal summer residence called Rocca dei Papi is also here. It has been greatly restored and offers breath-taking views of the lake.

Stop off for a bite to eat in the small fishing town of Marta on the southern shores of Lake Bolsena. Here you can be guaranteed of some divine fish dishes that go perfectly with a crisp cold glass of dry white wine. What better way to satisfy a hungry appetite before moving on with your exciting trail of this picturesque part of Latium?

Enjoy taking a few nice photos at the busy town of Capodimonte with its quaint little harbour or exploring the ancient churches and palaces of Valentano. Be sure to visit the excellent museum of the prehistory of Tuscia and of the Rocca Farnese in which it is located. Tuscia was an ancient region of Italy ruled by the Etruscans that included a large part of Umbria, northern Latium and all of Tuscany.

Artefacts dating between the Lower Palaeolithic right through to the Iron Age are on display here and is sure to capture your imagination for a few hours. A few sections of this incredible museum also touch on local history through the medieval ages, the Renaissance, up until the modern day.

Other towns worth stopping off at along the way are Grotte di Castro, the inland town of Gradoli and the picturesque settlement of San Lorenzo Nuovo. There are many attractions here and fun festivals hosted between June and September and so would be a perfect place to end your thrilling tour around Lake Bolsena.
