Cenone

The Italian meal for New years Eve (San Silvestro) is called "Cenone" and, as you can imagine, it's a big and important meal. Any dish can be served but there are a few that cannot be missed on the table:

The first is Cotechino with Lentils, the Italian people believe that the lentils are representative of money, and that the casing of the Cotechino (the pig's shin and trotter) represent the bags to hold that money.... Both Lentils and Pig are culinary symbols for good luck here.

The second is Pandoro or Panettone for your dessert.... And don't forget some good Spumante or Brachetto, for your "brindisi" at Midnight! Happy New year!!! AUGURI!!!

P.S.: Also the Holidays are a perfect time to gather around the fireplace in an Italian villa, view here!

Really the most important Christmas decoration in Italy is the Christmas Crib (presepe or presepio in Italian). Most families will have one in their homes and also every church has a presepe and even many quares, shops, and other public areas wil feature one. Some of the best cities in Italy to go and see these public Nativity Scenes are: Naples (with its Via San Gregorio Armeno - home of the craftsmen for Native Scenes), Vatican City with an enormous Crib in St. Peter's Square, Verona where an international display of nativities can be seen in in the Arena in January, Trento in Alto-Adige region has a large nativity scene in Piazza Duomo and not to forget Celleno, a small town in the Lazio region with a beautiful presepe that is set up for viewing all year around.
