According to local legend, Santa Claus has arrived in Milan at the end of November each year since 1400 to deliver toys and gifts to each child in the city. Next, he is said to hop on his boat, leave the city, and head up the Navigli and Ticino River to make his way to Lake Maggiore. The Flaiano Prizes are often simply referred to as a film festival. However, this incredible series of events that take place annually in Pescara, Abruzzo is that and so much more. The Flaiano Prizes, or Premi Flaiano, are a set of Italian international awards in various fields including creative writing, cinema, theater and radio-television.

Established in honour of the Italian author and screenwriter Ennio Flaiano in 1973, the awards have been given out at the Teatro Monumentale Gabriele D'Annunzio in Pescara since 1974. This festival celebrates the birth of the Virgin Mary who, according to Christian tradition, was born on September 8th in an unknown year, somewhere near Nazareth. The large basilica of Santissima Annunziata is dedicated to her worship and her birthday is a day of celebration that involves religious ceremonies, paper lanterns...and spit wads?

Italy is home to multiple opera festivals all around the country but, if you are looking at booking a vacation rental in Le Marche and want to attend such an event, the Rossini Opera Festival is the one for you.

Taking place between the 11th of August and the 23rd of August 2018, the festival is in the 39th edition this year. Named for opera composer Gioachino Rossini, this international music festival was established in 1980 and is held in August of each year in Pesaro, his birthplace. In the last post, we discussed the charming and pretty town of Pordenone and its many architectural gems. However, that isn't all there is to the town. In fact, it has a lot to offer a visitor. In addition to everything else, Pordenone is a cultural hub that plays host to many different events throughout the year. One of these is the book festival Pordenone Legge, which has been taking place for over a decade and sees the town taken over by book stalls, interviews with both Italian and international writers, and lectures by journalists and scholars for a week each September.

Pordenone has also been the primary host to the Giornate del Cinema Muto, a festival dedicated to silent film, since 1981. Taking place each October, the festival was the first, largest and most important international festival dedicated to silent film. Named as one of the top 50 unmissable film festivals in the world according to Variety, it is a unique experience that any movie lovers visiting the city will enjoy.
