Flaiano Prizes: One Of Italy's Most Interesting Cultural Events

Cinema tickets
The Flaiano Prizes are often simply referred to as a film festival. However, this incredible series of events that take place annually in Pescara, Abruzzo is that and so much more. The Flaiano Prizes, or Premi Flaiano, are a set of Italian international awards in various fields including creative writing, cinema, theater and radio-television.

Established in honour of the Italian author and screenwriter Ennio Flaiano in 1973, the awards have been given out at the Teatro Monumentale Gabriele D'Annunzio in Pescara since 1974. The actual event itself is comprised of exhibitions, conferences, shows and more, culminating in an awards ceremony in June and July each year.
Among the prize winners over the years, you will find lots of familiar faces and names across a spectrum of art forms and industries including Vittorio Gassman, Alberto Sordi, Giorgio Strehler, Tom Stoppard, Gina Lollobrigida, Ettore Scola, Ennio Morricone, Claudia Cardinale, Nicola Piovani, Giancarlo Giannini, Virna Lisi, Harold Pinter, Dario Fo, Ian Mc Ewan, Andrea Camilleri, Yves Bonnefoy, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jonathan Coe, Riccardo Milani, Anna Proclemer, Jerome Savary, Pippo Baudo, Alice and Hellen Kessler, Enrico Ghezzi, Fiorello, Michele Placido, Michelangelo Antonioni, Billy Wilder, Manoel De Oliveira, Susan Strasberg, Suso Cecchi D'Amico, Peter Greenaway, Luca Zingaretti, Ken Loach, Margarethe von Trotta, Carlo Lizzani, Giulietta Masina, Alberto and Piero Angela, Sergio Zavoli, Giovanni Minoli, Roberto Saviano, Terry Gilliam, the Nobel Prize winners Josè Saramago, Derek Walkott, Seamus Heaney, Alice Munro, Imre Kertesz, Wole Soyinka and the Pulitzer winner Hisham Matar.

As I have noted, there is more to the event than the film festival but it is true that, since 2001, the cinema element of the festival has become more prominent . There are several events and film selections, which are presented in cinemas around the town and open to the general public. The Flaiano Film Festival is one of Italy's International Film Festivals and, due to how open it is to the public, one of the best for average people interested in cinema who want to participate in. If you are a cinema enthusiast looking to holiday in Italy over the summer, maybe a vacation rental in Abruzzo and a trip to Pescara is just the thing...
