Known as the “Gateway to the Amalfi Coast,” Vietri is a bright and lovely place to spend some time wandering around, taking in its sights and purchasing very special souvenirs from the artisan shops of the historic centre.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, the locally-produced majolica became fashionable among Naples’ aristocracy and the town went from a sleepy fishing village to a bustling and important centre of artisanal production.
By the 19th century, however, things began to slow, with the advent of industrially produced ceramics. Luckily, the town was somewhat revived in the 1920s by the arrival of European artists settling on the Amalfi Coast. Today, it is tourist hotspot and remains relaxed but alive with action and visitors.

Tile murals and majolica shrines decorate local homes and Via Madonna degli Angeli is the epicentre of it all, where you'll find the most famous ceramic shops with their painted facades and overflowing quantity of colourful wares spilling outside.
