The Castel San Pietro is an incredible fortress located on a hill in a strategic and historically important position in the city of Verona. If you are exploring the area and have chosen the perfect villa in Verona for you and yours, then make sure to stop by and take in the wonderful vista that it presents and the magnificent views over Verona that it offers.
Foundations show that the first settlements on the site date back to the 7th century BC and it has been inhabited since Roman times. The building has changed hands multiple times through the barbarian invasions and the shifting of Italian lands from kingdom to kingdom over the centuries, until Italy became a nation united as one country. Having been variously held by Pepin, by Berengar, and by the King of Italy, it has been the property of the City of Verona since 1932 and is now a wonderful tourist attraction.
Castel San Pietro has also been altered and rebuilt time and time again over the centuries but the current iteration is largely reflective of a design by the Austrian Colonel Petrasch, under whom alterations were made in the Romanesque Revival style in the 19th century.
While the building itself is not actually open to the public, due to disuse and neglect over time, the site is still popular as it is on the waterfront, raised up on that strategic hill and looks like a fairytale image. However, from the esplanade in front, overlooking the Roman Theatre and Stone Bridge, you can take in a truly magnificent view of the beautiful city of Verona. If you are explore the area, it is a charming little attraction to easily pop into your itinerary and swing past as you wander.
