Over on the Tuscany Villas blog we have previously discussed the Negroni cocktail and its origins. While the exact details of said origins are disputed and their are many versions of the tale, the most popular attributes it to the Caffè Casoni (now called Caffè Giacosa) in Florence in 1919, when a Count Camillo Negroni asked the bartender, Forsco Scarselli, to strengthen his favourite cocktail by adding gin rather than the normal soda water to an Americano. To this, an orange garnish rather than the typical lemon garnish of the Americano, was also added and, soon, the cocktail became a favourite at the bar.
If you have found a luxury villa in Florence and are planning a Spring or Summer visit, the Negroni is a perfect cocktail to sip under the shade of an umbrella in a sunny piazza while on vacation but, for the colder months, you want its younger sibling instead, the Spiced Negroni. This version was born in and is found on the menu of Venice's Caffè Florian. Created in 2012, as the bar devised a menu of classic cocktails given a modern twist, it is an ideal, flavourful delight that adds a spicy herbal tea into the mix, replaces the vermouth with a house-made spice blend-infused vermouth, and adds them to the Campari and gin called for in the original recipe.
For this variation, you should get planning your winter getaway with a private villa in Venice and go ahead and grab a seat in this iconic Venetian establishment that we have mentioned before to give a Spiced Negroni a try after long days of shopping and exploring the city while it is at its most festive.
