Limoncello
The stunning coastal town of Sorrento is located in the bay of Naples and is one of those perfect places to relax on the beach, wander, eat too much and sip tasty drinks. It is the ideal place to relax and unwind and do very little of anything at all. If you have found a vacation rental in Sorrento, found the perfect book to bring along with you, found a great restaurant to dine in and are feeling super-chilled out, be sure to remember this one thing: order a Limoncello after your meal!
Limoncello is a characteristic Italian liqueur that is produced in Southern Italy – around Amalfi, in Procida, Ischia, Capri, Abruzzo, Basilicata, Apulia, Sicily, Sardinia, and elsewhere – but is a tradition of Sorrento, in particular. It has a smooth lemon flavour that can range from sweet to sharp and super citrusy and can be sipped on its own, mixed into sparkling water, or mixed into cocktails but it is most commonly served chilled after meals in small ceramic glasses, that are also chilled, as a digestif.

Traditionally made from the zest of Femminello St. Teresa lemons, also known as Sorrento or Sfusato lemons, it is steeped in rectified spirit until the oil is released and then mixed with simple syrup. Its exact origins are unknown but the liqueur is thought to be around one hundred years old.

Today, it is the second most popular liqueur in Italy after Campari and is served in restaurants all over the world. There are also many variations available, including pistachiocello, meloncello , arancello (flavoured with oranges), and fragoncello (flavoured with strawberry), and crema di limoncello, which is made with milk instead of syrup.

Foodies visiting Sorrento or the south of Italy, in general, will find it hard to avoid Limoncello but, on the off chance you're not offered it anywhere, make sure to get your hands on some. It is a characteristic beverage of the area and shouldn't be missed!
