Food is one of the things that makes many choose Italy as a holiday destination. The culture of dining, of spending hours eating and enjoying the company of your fellow diners, no technology infringing upon the experience, is something that appeals to residents of countries where this has died in favour of busy schedules and convenience. Plus, good food is never far away or hard to find and Italian cuisine is, by and large, a comforting, hearty style that developed from peasant dishes. However, if you want to try something a little different, why not supplement your Italian dining experiences with a trip to the best restaurant in the world?

Osteria Francescana is located in Modena and does not offer a typical Italian dining experience by any means. It is, however, somewhere that should make foodies excited. Just find a villa with pool in Emilia-Romagna and book a table well in advance to try it out for yourself.
Bottura at Work
People have, in fact, been known to fly from all over the world and stay just long enough to try out the restaurant. We would recommend that you try it out but also experience the beautiful city of Modena while you're at it.

Osteria Francescana was opened in 1995 by Massimo Bottura, a formerly disenchanted law student who went on to become a leading figure amongst a new generation of Italian chefs. He is known as one of the world’s most creative culinary forces and has two restaurants situated in Modena, the 3 Michelin star Osteria Francescana and an offshoot brasserie called Franceschetta58. Osteria Francescana has been lauded since it opened and was awarded its first Michelin star in 2002, a second four years later and, finally, a third in 2011. Unanimously ranked top in class by L’Espresso, Gambero Rosso and the Touring Club Guide, Osteria Francescana has been in the top five of The World`s 50 Best Restaurants listing for several years and has been voted the best restaurant in Italy for the past 7 years.

It ascended to the top of the annual ranking of the world’s best restaurant on the 13th of June 2016 and was awarded the honour at the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards in New York. This list has been compiled by trade publication “Restaurant” magazine since 2002 and was based the personal experiences of 972 chefs, restaurateurs, food writers and culinary experts.

Dining in the restaurant is quite the experience. Works of art by the likes of Damien Hirst adorn the walls and the dishes themselves look like stunning works of art, all inspired by Bottura's life and experiences. The tasting menu costs €250 and €130 for the wine pairing and takes the diner through an experimental experience. This is for the truly adventurous eater who is more interested in the concepts and whole show than just the food but there is also an à la carte menu to choose from that is a little more conventional.

The experience that this restaurant offers is closer to art and is a must for serious foodies visiting Italy – it's something you're sure to never forget!
