Carpino Folk Festival, crowd
Carpino, in Puglia, is within a two hour drive of the busy international airport Bari but is probably not a name that many are very familiar with. Yet, each summer, thousands descend upon this little town for an incredible music festival: the Carpino Folk Festival.

The setting could not be more perfect or picturesque with the sun shining overhead, kissing the white-washed buildings, open piazza, cobbled lanes and buzzing crowds, excited to take in the music and festivities.

Down below, the lovely Lake Varano, olive groves, beach resorts and Gargano National Park all stretch out like a painting. The whole thing makes for an incredible atmosphere that can not be replicated elsewhere.
Don't expect throngs of other tourists, long lines for museums or anything else like that. Instead, you'll find an authentic experience of an Italian summer, an Italian celebration and how locals have fun and appreciate good music.

You'll also discover a town exploding with joy as the regular population of 5000 rapidly expands to welcome back sons and daughters that have had to leave to find work elsewhere.

The festival takes place over several days and the town is pretty much totally asleep during the day, saving every ounce of energy for the evening activities. You can use this time to explore the area and that aforementioned stunning landscape.
Come evening, there are stands selling candy floss, olive oil, caciocavallo cheese, ham and various other delicious local delicacies for you to enjoy. Of course, the main attraction is the music and Italian folk music pretty much has its spiritual home at the Carpino Folk Festival. It is also growing increasingly popular across Europe, attracting all sorts of musicians.

Expect excitable crowds, sing-alongs, theatre and dance performances, workshops, debates, books presentations and cinema, as well as some of the greatest traditional musicians, singers and Italian artists who always come to perform on Carpino’s stage.

Authentic, vibrant and absolutely loads of fun, this is one festival in Italy that you really do not want to miss if you have found a luxury villa in Puglia and are visiting the area in August.
