naples and mount vesuvius
Gaze upon the striking view of Mount Vesuvius during your next vacation to the southern region of Campania. This volcanic cone shaped mountain is still active as it has erupted many times over the last few centuries although its last one was in 1944.

Located in the Gulf of Naples, Vesuvius is still considered to be highly dangerous. Despite this, the rich fertile lands that stretch around the volcanic mountain are populated by over three million people! Tours are available to bring visitors on walks up to Vesuvius where a lot of interesting information can be learned about the formation, geology and past eruptions of it.
mount vesuvius eruption
The most vicious eruption of Mount Vesuvius occurred in 79AD. Pressure had been building under the mountain’s hardened cone cap for years and when finally the pressure became too much, a huge explosion erupted. It sent a choking cloud of poisonous gases, stones and ash 33 kilometres into the air!

The victim towns of nearby Pompeii and Herculaneum and its people were completely buried under this lethal cloud of ash and rock and for many centuries, it remained covered.

Today these sites have become open air museums that vividly detail those terrible moments before and after the deadly eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Torre Azzunziata where you can see actual cast reconstructions of people who died trying to flee from the poisonous cloud of ash.

These sites are remarkably well preserved because of the volcanic blanket which buried them and allows us a fascinating glimpse into what happened during this tumultuous time.

Visit Mount Vesuvius on your next vacation to Campania and be amazed by its mysterious splendour!

Stay in a quaint villa in Campania and explored other delightful attractions in the region including the scenic Cilento area and Vallo di Diano National Park and the stunning Aragonese Castle on Ischia Island off the coast of Naples!
