Verona in Veneto in the north-east of Italy, is one of the most charming towns in the country, renowned for its beauty, ties to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and its summer opera season. Located immediately inside the town wall is Piazza Brà, a large open space dominated by the massive Arena. Built in the first century B.C., it is one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in existence.

This year's opera season opened on the 1st of June and continues until the 6th of September. Shows being performed include Nabucco (19th June – 5th September), Aida (20th June – 6th September), Tosca (26th June – 14th August), Don Giovanni (4th July – 12th August), Carmen (24th July), Il Barbiere di Siviglia (1st August – 4th September) and Roméo et Juliette (8th August – 3rd September). Two ballets are also part of the schedule, Roberto Bolle and Friends on the 22nd of July and the Gala di Mezza Estate on the 14th of August. In addition on the 25th of August Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, a production of music and medieval poetry, will be performed.

Tickets begin at €13.00 and go up to €204.00, depending on the performance, time and area one is sitting in. Dress-codes also vary depending on where one is sitting and need to be considered. For example, for the highest tier of tickets, attendees are expected to turn up in eveningwear, while in the second tier, one should wear occasionwear and those in the lowest tier should wear elegant to casual clothing. Tickets must be purchased either online or through hotels.
