See the unusual ‘La Madonna Che Corre in Piazza’ which takes place in Sulmona, Abruzzo. This translates as ‘The Virgin Mary who races through the Square’!
Strange as the name sounds, the meaning of it goes back to the story of the mourning Mary after the death of her son Jesus on the cross. At first she finds it hard to believe that he has been resurrected and ascended into heaven but when she realises and sees that he has risen from the dead, she races towards him!

This is represented in Sulmona with a procession carrying a statue of Mary clad in a dark cloak emerging from the church in Sulmona. This statue is carried on the shoulders of several men.
At first the solemn parade moves slowly but when Mary ‘sees’ her risen son, she ‘runs’ towards him. Her cloak falls behind and a flock of doves are released into the sky as a symbol of this pure joy!
Three days of Easter events take place here in the pretty town of Sulmona in the lead up to this climatic celebration!
Taking a break from the physical celebrations taking place at Easter throughout Italy, let’s take a look at some special gastronomic treats in store for your seasonal visit. Traditional Easter foods include roast lamb and goat and roast vegetables such as artichokes and courgettes. Many sweet and savoury Easter breads are baked in every region of Italy, some shaped in the form of a dove as a symbol of this joyous occasion in the Catholic calendar.
