Looking for a beautiful Italian town to visit on your next exciting holiday in the Abruzzo region? Then make a day trip to Sulmona, a beautiful ancient town in the Valle Peligna.

This land was once the bed of a huge lake that eventually drained in prehistoric times. Choose from a lovely range of vacation rentals in Abruzzo and travel at your ease to visit Sulmona and other gems in this region.

A famous poet called Publius Ovidius Naso was born here in 43BC and his romantic poetic writings placed him firmly in the ranks of other literary greats like Virgil and Horace. A bronze statue honouring him stands in one of the main squares of Sulmona.

Surrounded by mountains, Sulmona is a lively community with everything here to satisfy a tourist’s need in terms of culture, history and cuisine. Start your day with a walk around some of Sulmona’s most elegant monuments. The Aqueduct of Sulmona is most certainly a feast for the eyes!
Palazzo Annunziata in Sulmona
Built in 1256, this medieval masterpiece comprises of 21 pointed arches with three storey sections that transported water from the River Gizio in the surrounding mountains, down to Sulmona. Sadly, Sulmona was the victim of an earthquake in 1706 and most of the city was flattened except for renowned monuments including the Aqueduct, the Palazzo Annunziata and the Church of Santa Maria della Tomba.

A Prisoner of War (POW) camp exists in Sulmona called Campo 78. It was used during World War I to mostly hold British and Austrian military soldiers and some civilians. Walk along the beautifully designed Corso Ovidio which runs along the main sights of the town including its magnificent cathedral.
Piazza Garibaldi
Spend a glorious few hours visiting the quaint little shops, stalls and bakeries that line the Corso Ovidio of Sulmona and become immersed in the warm hospitality of this Italian town.

Explore the stunning Piazza Garibaldi, Sulmona’s largest square where most of the town’s civic and religious festivals take place during the year. On the last week of July, the exciting medieval palio festival called ‘Giostra Cavalleresca di Sulmona’ takes place and would be a fantastic event to experience.

Twice a week a market is held here where you can buy fresh local food products, wine and stunning home-made crafts you could take home as souvenirs.

Sulmona is particularly famous for making a sweet treat of sugared almonds so why not taste them for yourself on your charming visit here? Savour a delicious local dish called ‘Spaghetti alla Chitarra’ which is fresh spaghetti tossed in a rich tomato ragù. Enjoyed along with a glass of Italian red wine, an evening of dining in Sulmona would put a perfect end to your stay here!
