Following our introductory article on the small state of San Marino situated between Emilia Romagna and Le Marche, here are some ideas on what to see and do when you arrive. Since the 13th century, the Republic of San Marino has been an independent country which has its own government, currency and cultural traditions.

Probably the most striking sight you’ll meet first are the three ancient towers that rise above the jutted rock of Mount Titano. Situated at the foot of this majestic mountain is the historic city centre of San Marino. These towers served the state well for soldiers to spot the oncoming attacks of the Malatesta of Rimini and prepare their strategies of defence and attack in good time.

Start off your exploration of San Marino city with a look at the Gothic style Public Palace building from which the entire country is governed. It looks out onto Liberty Square which is always a busy social hub where people meet for coffee, food, business and trade.

Later, take a stroll to see to the magnificent Titano Theatre which was constructed in 1777 and regularly hosts enchanting operas and classical music performances. Many beautiful religious buildings are dotted through San Marino such as the Basilica of San Marino which houses some intriguing religious treasures worth seeing.
Borgo Maggiore near San Marino
Travel by cable car from San Marino city to the nearby village of Borgo Maggiore up in the mountains. Attend the weekly Thursday market hosted in its small piazza and sample the delicious local produce on offer.

San Marino’s largest city is Dogana which is situated in the North-Eastern corner of the state.

It’s the main entry point for traffic coming to and from Italy and as there are no border controls as such, it’s very easy for tourists to come and see this fascinating small country for themselves.
