Mount Titano
If you want to visit one of the strangest places in Italy then head to the North-Eastern side of the Apennine Mountains where the tiny enclaved micro state of San Marino is located! Known officially as the Republic of San Marino, this tiny country is just over 61 square kilometres in size and has a population of approximately 32,000 people.

Its capital is called San Marino but its largest city is called Dogana. This fascinating state of San Marino claims to be the oldest surviving sovereign and constitutional republic in the world.

Another unusual fact about San Marino is that it is being governed according to six books written in Latin from the late 16th century that outline matters of conducts relating to politics, infrastructure and laws for example.

Strangely it is also the only country in the world that has more cars than people! San Marino state lies on the border between Le Marche and Emilia Romagna and is only 10 kilometres away from the coastal town of Rimini overlooking the Adriatic coast.

A worthy activity during a visit here would be to climb to the summit of Monte Titano in San Marino. At a height of 741 metres above sea level, the views from the peak of this mountain are simply breath taking!

San Marino is the third smallest country in Europe with the state of Vatican City in Latium, Italy and the State of Monaco in France being smaller. In 2008, San Marino was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage Site list for its uniqueness, rich culture, historical and scenic values.

Visit this mesmerising country for yourself on your next holiday to Italy and enjoy exploring its many attractions. Stay in a villa rental in Le Marche or Emilia Romagna and easily travel here for a day or two.
