It stands proudly at an elevation of 1460 metres and was built only as a secure residence for military troops passing through the area from the 10th century onwards.

It began humbly as a singular watchtower and later a courtyard, three corner towers and a central tower were added in the 13th century. Its base was virtually impenetrable as the stones used to construct it were absolutely huge; much larger than the ones used to build the more elevated sections of the fortress.
Due to a powerful earthquake in 1461, the Rocca Calascio was badly damaged as was the town of Calascio below it. Although the town was rebuilt, the Rocca was left as it was. While you’re visiting the remains of what was once a majestic monument, be sure to visit the elegantly designed octagonal church of Santa Maria della Pietà.

If you’re passing through L’Aquila then a visit to the Museo Nazionale d’Abruzzo would be well worth your time! Located in the Forte Spagnolo, this fascinating museum is comprised of three floors dedicated to the skeletons of prehistoric animals, archaeological finds from the pre-Roman period and a collection of medieval and modern art.
See the Stadio Adriatico in Pescara which hosted the 1960’s Summer Olympics and the majestic white cathedral here with a modern Abruzzo style architecture on the exterior and a colourful tapestry of artworks and sculptures inside to be admired.
