They are frequently visited by tourists and botanists who come to admire the beauty and serenity of this place and see the delicate and rare ninfea flowers that grow like a blanket around the shores of Lago Piccolo and Lago Grande. The smaller lake, called Lago Piccolo is light green in colour and Lago Grande is olive green in colour. They’re nicknamed as the ‘Twins of Mount Vulture’ due to their similarity in colour and geological formation.
Visitors can embark on some magical nature trails around the lakes and visit two abbeys that overlook these tranquil pools of green. One is called the Abbey of St. Michael and the other is the ruins of the Abbey of St. Hippolytus.
