Roman Forum built during the reign of the empire
The origins of what went on to become one of the largest and most powerful empires in the ancient world began on the peninsula of Italy around the 8th century BC near the site where Rome city now stands.

Through its 1200 years of existence the ancient Roman civilisation went through stages of monarchy, classical republic before transforming into the formidable empire that expanded across much of Europe and around the Mediterranean.

Powerful emperors like Julius Caesar, and Augustus contributed a great deal in organising this growing empire to be one of strength, intelligence and durability. Much effort was invested into studying strong government dynamics, politics, architecture, literature and warfare strategies to name but a few.

Today many monuments and documentation of this empire’s vast knowledge can be studies. Modern republics like France and the United States have used the Roman Empire government structure as a basis upon which to build their own.

But as with entities that grow to such volumes, troops and governance were stretched thinly. The western part of the Roman Empire was hit first by migrating civilisations and dissatisfied inhabitants within the empire borders.

The once mighty Roman Empire was eventually retreated back to within Italian borders from all directions under the guidance of Turkish, Siberian and Egyptian armies for example. But much history, culture and learning can still be absorbed from the legacy of this incredible civilisation.
