But with the Roman Empire’s demise, much of this precious knowledge was either lost or destroyed. Hence the name given to the bleak time preceding the Renaissance as ‘The Dark Ages’.

The Renaissance came about as a result of a well supported cultural movement called Humanism. This was a philosophy that all people should strive to be highly educated in the art’s literature and science. Great efforts were pursued in art to achieve a sense of realism and raw emotion in life paintings and sculpture.

This exciting rebirth of knowledge and cultural growth is believed to have originated in the Tuscan city of Florence and soon spread throughout the rest of Italy with the help of wealthy visionaries and talented creatives. At this time, Italy as a whole was a wealthy nation and was keen to spend huge sums of money to help stylise their country and place it firmly on the map once again.
