Asolo is also part of the national Città del Vino network and celebrates its prestigious wines each August with special tastings and events. The town preserves a rich heritage of handicrafts, including the Embroidery School of Asolo dedicated to fine linen, lace, and artistic ornaments, as well as colorful hand-painted ceramics. The villa takes its name from the galero, a broad-brimmed hat with tasselled cords traditionally worn by Catholic clergy, with the red galero reserved exclusively for cardinals. The timeless charm of Asolo has drawn countless intellectuals and artists, among them Robert Browning, Eugene Benson, Igor Stravinsky, and Ernest Hemingway, as well as three extraordinary women: Caterina Cornaro, former Queen of Cyprus, who in 1489 established a vibrant Renaissance court of artists, writers, and poets; Eleonora Duse, the world-renowned actress and star of international theatre; and Freya Stark, the celebrated explorer, author, and photographer. As Robert Browning wrote in a letter dated 1889 to Mrs. FitzGerald, I assure you that even with the experience I have had of the most beautiful landscapes in Italy and elsewhere, I know of nothing that can compare with the view one enjoys from the tower and the Queen's palace.
