A worthy day trip if you're spending your holiday north of Italy is to explore the majestic castles that surround the stunning Lake Como, in the province of Como in Lombardy. It’s regarded as Italy’s favourite lake to visit and is also the deepest one in the country.

The location of this lake, which was beside the main route of trade between central Europe and Rome in ancient times, made it a prosperous place to live. Many castles were built along its edge, most using the stretch of water as a clever protective boundary from frequent invaders.

Fortresses were built on its shores that date from the Middle Ages, through the 19th century and even from the beginning of World War I. Some are open for tourists to walk around and others, which are now hotels or homes in private ownership, can be admired from the hills that surround them.

For foodies who are planning a vacation in Italy who love to try local tipples, it is definitely a must-try if you have not yet already had the opportunity to sample this classic liqueur.

Originally from the town of Saronno in Lombardy, there are several Italian brands today with Disaronno being undeniably the most well-known among them. Coming from the Italian for, “a little bitter,” this is, funnily enough, actually a sweet Italian liqueur though there is some mild bitterness. Made from apricot kernels, bitter almonds, peach stones, or almonds, depending on the brand, these are all natural sources of benzaldehyde, which lends its almond-like flavour.

Torba Monastery was originally built in the 5th century as a Roman stronghold against barbarian invasions and was used for military purposes under various rules and guises until it came into the possession of a group of Benedictine nuns in the 8th century. The building was expanded and adapted into a religious complex and the interiors were decorated with elaborate murals and frescoes.

Later still, the monastery fell into disuse as a religious building and was adopted by local farmers with far more practical goals in mind. They decided to cover the paintings with plaster and, in some cases, merely ignored the works, letting them fall into disrepair.

Much was lost, as a result, but some of the works managed to survive, despite the neglect. One particular example that remains has become famous and has led to the creation of lots of legends and rumours.
