While we often talk about the museums and art and architectural gems that one must make time for if they book a villa in Florence, it is important to remember that, as a city at the heart of Tuscany, this is also a dream holiday destination for all of the serious foodies of the world. From historic coffee houses serving incredible brews, to pastry shops where recipes have been passed down for several generations, to family-run eateries boasting hearty and delicious meals for a steal, to chic restaurants offering cutting-edge delicacies, to wine bars boasting amazing city views to pair with unbeatable Tuscan wines, and beyond, there are all sorts of culinary experiences on offer in the city. Among all of the foodie tourist attractions and musts, a visit to one of Florence’s famous markets is also unmissable. One of the most exciting among the markets in town is the Mercato Centrale.

Established in the spring of 2014, on the 140th anniversary of the iron and glass edifice that houses it, the Mercato Centrale is the brainchild of Umberto Montano and Claudio Cardini. A covered market in a building constructed in 1874 and designed by architect Giuseppe Mengoni, it is nestled in the historic San Lorenzo neighbourhood and is open daily.

Key in the revitalisation of this once bustling, historic mercantile sector of the city, the market is alive with both tradition and innovation. There are traditional stores and skilled food artisans and a vast range of products. From fresh fish to fried food, fruit and vegetables to cheeses, chocolate to fresh pasta, wines to street food classics like the lampredotto sandwich, it is a haven for food enthusiasts. Even better, is the fact that this is where you can readily get locally crafted food items made by passionate local experts at fantastic prices.

Plus, like many markets and food halls, it’s a great place to eat in order to suit larger groups who might have varied tastes as there are a variety of cuisines on offer under one roof. The market is on the ground floor and then the upper floor houses the expansive food court with everything from sushi to local specialities. With five hundred seats, free WiFi, and something for everyone, it’s a brilliant place to keep everyone fed and happy if you have booked a vacation rental in Florence or are visiting the city for the day during a stay in one of our holiday rentals in Tuscany.
