Cannoli

Cannoli are among the most beloved Italian desserts and are now available in restaurants and bakeries all over the world. However, it is always best to try a food where it comes from...

Well, I guess we just have one more reason to book a villa in Sicily, then...

Coming from the Sicilian word, cannolu, which is a diminutive meaning, “little tube,” these classic treats are called cannolo in the singular form in Italian and cannoli in the plural but generally just referred to as cannoli in both singular and plural in English. A tube-shaped fried pastry that is filled with sweet ricotta, it is considered a staple of Sicilian cuisine and for good reason – they’re incredibly delicious!

They also have a very long history, with some experts tracing them all the way back to sometime between 827 and 1091AD in Caltanissetta in Sicily. This was during the period of Arab rule of the island, a period that forever changed and inspired Sicilian art, architecture, culture, language, and more. Sicilian cuisine, too, was affected and inspired by Arabic influences and it was through this connection that we saw the introduction of candied fruits, pistachios, and cinnamon into local dishes. One of the theories of the origins of cannoli says that they were actually the invention of the concubines of the princes of the Emirate of Sicily, who invented the tasty treat in order to win the princes over to themselves through their stomachs. Similar desserts such as "Zaynab's fingers", which are filled with nuts, and qanawāt, which are deep-fried dough tubes filled with various sweets, that are also Middle Eastern traditional specialities further give credence to this potential origin story. Others claim, however, that they were historically prepared as a treat during Carnival and there are similar dishes in these local traditions as well.

However, no matter how and by whom cannoli were invented, they remain delicious and are best enjoyed while relaxing and unwinding and indulging a little during a vacation in one of our holiday rentals in Sicily...
