Ferrara is enclosed by Renaissance defensive walls that may be incomplete today but are still extensive. This iconic feature of the city is important to daily life and is well-maintained. It is a place where locals come to walk, jog, cycle, and take in the views. If you're looking to stretch your legs and get some exercise on holidays, come and walk the full 10km length of it or just explore some stretches and admire the scenery.

9. Take a Wander Around The Museo Archeologico Nazionale
The Museo Archeologico Nazionale, or National Archaeological Museum of Ferrara, is located in one of the city's beautiful old palaces, a building that boasts a stunning architectural scheme, incredible frescoes and a landscaped garden out back, as well as an outstanding hoard of items discovered at nearby archaeological sites like that at Spina. Come and wander the amazing building and take in the vases, pottery, gold, silver and, even, two ancient recovered boats.
10. Explore the Ferrara Botanical Gardens
Ferrara's university, like many, has a Botanical Garden for research and study and it makes for a nice place to spend a pleasant morning, wandering about, at your leisure. Take in the over 1300 greenhouses species, 700 outdoor species, exotic plants, medicinal plants, Japanese garden, and more. Best of all, admission is free and the garden is open daily from 9am to 1pm.
