Italian food
This week we're talking all about the beautiful Renaissance city of Ferrara and explaining why a visit is a must for those who have found a holiday rental in Emilia Romagna. A fascinating place that can rival many of the great cities of Italy, it is steeped in history, culture and art and boasts much to see and do. We are continuing to extol some of the cities many charms with more entries into our list of the top ten things you must do in Ferrara...

4. Grab a Drink In The Oldest Wine Bar In The World

Al Brindisi is a bar located right next to the city's lovely Cathedral and it happens to date back to 1435, making it the oldest wine bar in the world. It is a must-see for anyone visiting Ferrara and offers lots of traditional local dishes and great wines. Whether you try the cuisine or just pop in for a drink, make sure to pencil it in.

5. Sample the Delicious Local Cuisine

Ferrara has a lot of famous and beloved local dishes so there are lots of things to try when you visit: Coppia, its IGP certified and elaborately shaped bread, for one; cappellacci pasta filled with pumpkin and parmesan, which is very seasonal right now; pasticcio di maccheroni, a dish descended from court traditions; and the panpepato, a spicy fruit cake covered in chocolate.

6. Wander the Original Medieval Core

While we have noted that the city largely reflects the Renaissance period, however, it is still based on a medieval plan and the centre of the city is this original core from the Middle Ages. Said Medieval core is filled with spacious Renaissance buildings from the city's most prosperous period and lots of beautiful palaces in particular. Therefore, simply wandering around the little medieval streets and taking in the gorgeous Renaissance buildings is a delight in its own right. After filling up on local treats, digest, get a little lost, and take it all in. Notable buildings, in particular, are the Palazzo dei Diamanti, Palazzo Schifanoia and the small Marfisa d’Este Palace, among others.

7. Enjoy Local Events

Ferrara is home to lots of unique events throughout the year so be sure to pay attention to the calendar when booking and experience the oldest palio in the world, the Palio di San Giorgio, on the last Sunday of May or the Ferrara Buskers Festival during the last week of August, to name just two.

There are plenty of other things to see and do in Ferrara but for our final picks of our top ten, be sure to read on to the last post in this series!
