The beautiful seaside resort of Sperlonga is a long-held favourite of the people of Latium and it is easy to see why. Quaint, picturesque and full of charm, it is an idyllic place to escape to the beach if you have found a vacation rental in Latium.
Along with the pretty cluster of buildings and the long stretch of sandy beach and blue waters, the town's most iconic sight is the Torre Truglia, or Truglia tower.
This somewhat strange looking defensive tower stands on a promontory that extends out into the Tyrrhenian and boasts incredible views over the sea. Built in 1532 over a previous Roman tower, this geometric building, constructed in pale stone and looking a little like a sandcastle, was constructed as a defensive feature to protect Sperlonga from further pirate attacks after an incident in which the town was sacked during the 16th century.
It was rebuilt in 1611, after the destruction of Barbarossa and then destroyed again in 1623 and rebuilt once more. Between 1870 and 1969, it was used as headquarters of the Guardia di Finanz and then became the seat of the Marine Centre of Education Marine for the Riviera d'Ulisse Regional Park.
Today, it is a regular pit-stop for tourists as it boasts exceptional views of the sea and beaches below and is popular for photo ops. Painting a stark and, in my opinion, lovely image as a pale and an odd-looking, but striking, building that rises up out of the rich azure hues of the sea and is framed by the endless blue of the sky. It is a photogenic little gem on the Italian coast and a must for those interested in architecture or aesthetics.
