Rome is home to a treasure trove of ancient monuments and architectural gems all throughout the city. However, most are buzzing tourist attractions that are steeped in modernity. The Parco degli Acquedotti (Park of the Aqueducts) is a 240-hectare protected green space, located in the Appia Antica Regional Park, just on the outskirts of Rome. Just take a Metro line A to Lucio Sestio or Giulio Agricola and you'll find the park entrance after about a 10 minute walk. It is also a pleasant place to bring a picnic and one can rent bikes to better explore the whole park.

Containing over half of the eleven major Roman aqueducts, the park is also home to many more astounding examples of ancient architecture and historical artefacts. The particular aqueducts in the park include the underground aqueduct Anio Vetus, the Marcia, Tepula, Julia, Felice, Claudia, and Anio Novo aqueducts and it takes around two hours to walk around all of them. Virtually tourist free and with lots of open space, it is a stunning place to experience Rome of old in all of its continuing grandeur.
In addition to the aqueducts, you will find the ruins of the imperial Vignacce Villa and its baths; the 13th century Casale di Roma Vecchia, a house-tower that was likely part of a coaching inn; various tombs; and many other archaeological sites of interest.
Most of all, however, this is a space to come and escape the crowds and activity of Rome for a while, breathe in the fresh air, and go for a pleasant stroll, taking in your truly stunning surroundings...
