The Republic of San Marino is a tiny country located in Italy that is just over 61 square kilometres in size and has a population of approximately 32,000 people. Located on the border between Le Marche and Emilia Romagna, it is the third smallest country in Europe with only the State of Vatican City in Latium, Italy and the State of Monaco in France being smaller. In 2008, it was officially recognised for its unique charms, historical and cultural value, and scenic beauty and was added to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites.

At Christmas, this pretty and historic little country is even more beautiful and full of things to see and do. It is here that you will find a city bursting at the seams with Christmas cheer From late November, the old districts of San Marino spring to life with magical scenery and its famous Christmas markets, all part of the initiatives of a project called The Christmas of Wonders.

Contrada Omagnano and Piazzale Domus Plebis become the “Wool Street” and will be adorned with special and colourful woollen decorations while Contrada Santa Croce will become the “Fire Street”, lit up prettily by a series of candles and lanterns. In addition, the Piazza della Libertà will become the “Star Square” and be lit up by a giant star and amazing light effects and projections will come to life on the walls along the streets of the old town centre.

Throughout these lovely, illuminated streets, some of the best buskers in Italy will be playing music and doing little shows and performances. Of course, this all goes without mentioning any of the activities or attractions that will be taking place but merely paints a picture of the incredible setting that you will have on your hands.
