Vignamaggio is a historical wine estate that has been producing and selling wine since 1404. Located in the hills between Greve in Chianti and Lamole, in the heart of the Chianti Classico, it is also famous as the location that is often attributed as the birthplace of the sitter from Leonardo's Mona Lisa. The estate offers several different types of tours, including some that give insight into the connection with that great painter and you can also go on tastings to sample the famous wine and other products that are produced there. The family spearheaded the newfound passion for the deeply rich, indigenous Nero D’Avola grape and the exponential growth of Sicilian wine in the last decade. The winery is located in the Planeta ancestral home, a 17th century farmhouse located next to the ruins of an ancient Arab castle on the shores of Lake Arancio, near the town of Sambuca in Sicilia. Cantina di Ulmo was the first of their wineries (now there are four) and was established in 1995. Surrounded by 95 hectares of vineyards, this is the prettiest of their wineries and is wholly dedicared to the production of Planeta’s whites.
