1. Ceretto Aziende Vitivinicole, Alba, Piedmont

Ceretto Aziende Vitivinicole is a fascinating wine estate in Alba that has been run by the Ceretto family for three generations. Spanning more than 140 hectares and stretching across four villages, it produces some of the region's best wines including Nebbiolo d’Alba, a rich and slightly spicy Barbaresco, and a deep, earthy Barolo. Settled across pretty hills, dotted by small villages and farmhouses, the vineyards are picturesque and a wonderful setting for a lazy day of tasting wines and touring the grounds.

However, there is more to the estate than just excellent wine. It is also an artistic hub where you can see cutting edge art, architecture and design. Turin architects Luca and Marina Deabate were commissioned to build a monument to the Barolo wine when the winery was established and artists David Tremlett and Sol LeWitt renovated an old, unconsecrated chapel on the grounds called the Cappella delle Brunate.

There are several tours of the estate available such as the Wine and Art tour that includes a visit to the Cappella delle Brunate, as well as the winery tour and a tasting; the Barolo and Architecture tour that takes visitors to the Bricco Rocche winery and its glass Cube, as well as the Monsordo winery; a Barbaresco tour to the Ceretto winery in the village of Bricco Asili; a Wine and Hazelnut option combining a visit to the Monsordo winery and to a local nougat maker; and a Wine and Truffles tour to look for black truffles or white truffles when they are in season, before visiting the Monsordo winery and enjoying a guided tasting. 2. Castello di Ama, Chianti, Tuscany

Castello di Ama is a famous winery located in the medieval Tuscan village of Ama in the middle of the Chianti wine region. Like the Ceretto estate, this one is located in a beautiful setting, a lovely 18th century village that is almost entirely owned by Lorenza Sebasti and Marco Pallanti, and covers 500 acres of land, 200 of which are meticulously cultivated vineyards. The estate produces wine that regularly ranks as some of the best in the area and it is one of the main Chianti wine producing estates. Also like the Ceretto estate, Castello di Ama has an incredible art collection and there are works by artists such as Michelangelo Pistoletto, Anish Kapoor and Louise Bourgeois dotted around the grounds. There is a wine tasting tour available that not only takes you to the vineyards and cellars, but also shows visitors the villa, gardens and the art collection. Just find a vacation rental in Tuscany and spend a lovely day on this fascinating estate.
