Famous Italian Cocktails II

Negroni Sbagliato
Continuing on from our last post, here are some more examples of famous Italian cocktails. Italy is cocktail rich and, as a result, if you're looking to sit back and relax on your next holiday, there could be no better place for it. Just sip on one of these famous drinks, enjoy your surroundings and learn to adopt the very different pace of life.

One particularly famous cocktail is the Negroni. Supposedly, invented in Florence in 1919 at Caffè Casoni (now called Caffè Giacosa), when Count Camillo Negroni asked the bartender to strengthen his usual Americano. It was suddenly transformed by adding gin rather than the normal soda water and the swapping of an orange garnish for the typical lemon garnish of the Americano. The cocktail became incredibly famous and the Negroni Family founded the Negroni Distillerie in Treviso, where they produced a ready-made version of the drink. Negroni Sbagliato, meanwhile, is a variation of the classic Negroni that was invented in Milan.
“Sbagliato” means “mistake” and refers to a moment when a Negroni was being made in the legendary Bar Basso in Milan and spumante was grabbed instead of gin, by accident. Another hit was born and the drink became the bar's signature cocktail. Find a luxury villa in Florence and try the original at Caffè Giacosa, or give the beautiful mistake a try in Bar Basso once you have found a holiday rental in Milan.

Bombardino, meanwhile, is quite possibly the winter cocktail. Generally served in mountainous areas and at ski resorts, as a way to warm up, it is not unlike eggnog but is served warm and has a higher level of alcoholic content. There are lots of different recipes out there for the drink as towns, bars, restaurants and, even, families often have their own particular variations. However, the main ingredients are an egg-based liquor, coffee and rum or brandy. The “official” recipe was invented by pastry chef Gian Battista Pezziol, from Padua who found a new and creative way to use the eggs left after the production of Torrone, another Italian delicacy. If you like to ski and relax, just find a holiday rental in Trentino Alto Adige, hit the slopes and head to a local bar to warm up and try it for yourself.

The Bellini is on almost every cocktail menu in the world and is one of the world's most beloved alcoholic beverages. It was born in Venice in Harry's Bar sometime between 1934 and 1948 and was invented by Giuseppe Cipriani, founder of Harry's Bar. Named for its distinct pink colour that reminded him of the toga a saint wore in a painting by 15th-century Venetian artist Giovanni Bellini, it became popular in Venice and then at Harry's New York counterpart. As is often the case with the most delicious of things, it is very simple: just combine peach juice or purée with Prosecco. Official variations include the Puccini, Rossini and Tintoretto. The best place to enjoy the Bellini, however, remains Harry's Bar, which is still open and popular to this day. Just find a holiday rental in Venice and try this iconic drink for yourself.

So, if you're looking for a holiday full of indulgence and relaxation, look no further than Italy.
