We don't know about you but here at Easy Reserve we like to avoid the crazy tourist crowds, long lines and madness as best we can when we're on holidays. As such, we're always on the hunt for attractions that are just off the beaten track, sights that are special and a little less well-known, and adventure. In cities like Rome, for example, there are many world-famous attractions that draw people from far and wide. While some of them might be personal musts, there is a lot more to the city beyond those postcard moments.
In fact, right in the central district of Piazza Vittorio, inside the park, the remains of an old villa reveal the Porta Alchemica, the “Alchemist Door” that locals often call the “Magic Door.” This portal is famous among locals and steeped in legend but most tourists never see it and walk right on by.

Built in the early 1600s by the Roman marquis Massimiliano Palombara (a member of a group of known as "The Alchemists of Palazzo Riario" who gathered at the Roman court of Christina of Sweden, the Queen Regent of Sweden), it is the only remaining of five gate doors to the Marquis' villa.
The door is covered in symbols and inscriptions and, according to legend, come from when the Marquis met an alchemist at a dinner party who proclaimed to be able to transform metals into gold. He left without explaining how to do it, and only some gold flakes and the "recipe" for the transformation remained behind him once he disappeared forever more.
The Marquis was unable to read it and inscribed the recipe on the doors of his home, hoping that someone who could understand it would see and come knocking.

The villa was, sadly, destroyed during the construction of the Esquilino quarter but the door was saved, perhaps because of the legends and mystery surrounding it. In 1890, the gate was situated to the right of the Trophies of Marius and is now merely an ornamental monument in the Piazza Vittorio.
