Activities that kids will enjoy are key to making a successful family holiday and to keeping everyone in the group happy. It is even better if said activities are educational as well as fun and one of the best destinations or attractions to offer this is a zoological museum as it offers kids the chance to get up close and personal with animals, to observe them properly and learn in a safe environment.
These museums themselves, as well, tend to be set in pretty historic buildings that are attractions in their own right. Even if you're travelling by yourself, with friends or are on a romantic getaway, zoological museums are fun and fascinating places that anyone will enjoy.
Bologna's Zoological Museum, in particular, is a must-see as one of the oldest in the world. Just find a holiday rental in Emilia Romagna and pay a visit to the city and its wonderful zoological museum.

The museum owes its roots to Ulisse Aldrovandi, a bizarre and interesting man, who is considered the founder of modern Natural History. His “Storia Naturale”, a 13 volume printed work, was considered the most complete description of the three kingdoms of nature – mineral, vegetable and animal – available in the 16th century.
Aldrovandi began collecting all sorts of natural samples in his thirties after serving a sentence for heresy. This collection eventually amounted to 18,000 items and created the first great cabinet of curiosity.
It was even opened as a museum in Aldrovandi's lifetime, though access was limited to scholars and aristocrats. Centuries later it would be opened to the general public as the Bologna Zoological Museum.

In 1617 the museum was moved to the Palazzo Pubblico before being transferred to the rooms of the Istituto delle Scienze in Palazzo Poggi in 1742. During the nineteenth century much of the collection was moved else where and broken up but a portion of the original collection was returned to the Palazzo Poggi in 1907, where it remains on display to this day.
